By Aaron Humes, Tower Hill, Orange Walk: The old mill in Orange Walk is rumbling to life in anticipation of a new season.
Tended by human hands, it rouses to provide the nation with sustenance both economically and aesthetically.
Assuming success with its various preparatory work and tests, Belize Sugar Industries Limited/American Sugar Refining (BSI/ASR) says it will be ready to start crop on December 19.
That means that as of today there is just about a month to go and no time to waste. Every system must be ready to facilitate the new gravy train – direct consumption sugar.
BSI/ASR Finance Director Shawn Chavarria is clear as to their objective – to grant the press a closer look at what goes into making direct consumption sugar for both the Belizean and international markets.
Belizean white and brown sugar may not be as refined as its outside rivals, but it is the real deal according to production supervisor Nolberto Leiva, who took reporters through all the improvements made to safely and efficiently produce DC sugar.
Now all that is needed is product – and Chavarria says if the farmers are ready by December 19, then it is in everyone’s best interest to start without delay.
We will have further details of the trip to Tower Hill later on.
