By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Senegal and Bayern Munich star Sadio Mané has been ruled out and will not be playing the 2022 Qatar World Cup even after undergoing a successfully operation on Thursday in Austria.
Bayern Munich announced earlier that Mané had a ruptured tendon reattached to the head of the right fibula today in a surgical intervention.
“Sadio Mané underwent successful surgery in Innsbruck on Thursday evening. He will therefore no longer be available to play for Senegal at the World Cup,” said Bayern Munich.
“All the best for your recovery, Sadio!”
The Senegal Football Federation had said earlier that the team doctors had evaluated Mané and that he would need surgery and that he would not be able to play the World Cup. They didn’t say who would take his spot.
The Senegal Football Federation said it wished Mané a speedy recovery.
Mané suffered a leg injury on November 8 in Bayern’s 6-1 rout of Werder Bremen. Despite the injury, he had been included in the list of 26 Senegal players. Teams have up to 24 hours before their first game to make changes due to injury.
Mané, one of the best players in the world, was expected to lead African Cup champions Senegal in their bid to become the first African team to win the World Cup. He was recently voted the second-best player in the world by France Football, behind French international Karim Benzema.
The star forward previously played for Liverpool from 2016 to 2022 before joining the German champs.
Since 2012, Mané has played 93 times for Senegal scoring 34 goals. In 2020, he was named African Footballer of the Year.
Senegal faces the Netherlands in their first World Cup match on Monday. Afterwards, they’ll play Qatar and Ecuador.
