International News: Guatemalan authorities find more than 1,000 artifacts at American couple’s home

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Thursday, Guatemalan officials found 1, 222 archeological artifacts at the home of an American couple accused of smuggling historical relics, the Associated Press reports.

Inside their home in Antigua, investigators found large stone carvings and pottery pieces.

Authorities believe that they are part of a ring dedicated to illegally trafficking cultural goods.

The artifacts were handed over to the office of the Culture Ministry for examination.

Last week, American photographer, Stephanie Jolluck was detained at the airport when they found 2 stone carvings made between 600 and 900 A.D. in her bag.

Then on Sunday, Jolluck and her companion Giorgio Rossilli were detained when they were found with 166 Mayan artifacts in their vehicle.

Guatemala’s Culture Ministry then verified that 90% of the artifacts found in their vehicle were authentic.
