By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Representatives from the Department of Co-operatives and Belize District Extension Officers from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE) visited farmers in Nago Bank and Bomba in the Belize District on Thursday to assess their production status.

“Nago Bank is harvesting for delivery to buyers and to take to market in Belize City, while Bomba farmers are doing land preparation for onion planting,” MAFSE said in a social media post.

“Both groups are organized into cooperatives and use their group strength to facilitate their work.”

Registrar of Cooperatives Gareth Murillo said that the technical officers were doing a follow-up visit after the initial one they made just after Hurricane Lisa hit on November 2.

“They had done an intervention with them following the passage of the hurricane to do a damage and needs assessment, but subsequent to that they returned this week to look at what the farmers have in the fields in terms of what would be harvested in time for the November and the upcoming Christmas season,” Murillo said to Breaking Belize News (BBN).

“Nago Bank should have sweet peppers, tomatoes, and onions and Bomba might have some sweet peppers and tomatoes,” he said.

Murillo said the farmers in Nago Bank and Bomba, which are in the Maskall area off the old Northern Highway, didn’t experience much damage to their crops because they had already harvested.

“They reported minimal damages,” Murillo said.

“If they were nearer to harvesting then they would have had a bit more damage, but they were not. Many of the crops that they had, they had just done the cultivation, so they were not bearing as yet.”

According to Murillo, the two communities produce quite a range of vegetables and fruits.

“At Nago Bank, they produce practically the entire spectrum of vegetables,” Murillo said.

“They do tomatoes, sweet peppers, jalapeños, and cucumbers. They started recently over the last year and a half doing onions. They do everything. When it comes to fruits, they do watermelons and cantaloupes. I also know that they have cilantro and some mint. Nago Bank has a little bit of everything.

“At Bomba they are preparing for onion cultivation, but besides onions, they also do some sweet peppers and tomatoes. Last year they even had some broccoli,” Murillo said.
