By Aaron Humes, Belmopan: The Belize Police Department is continuing to beef up its methods of accountability by introducing bodycams to the specialized units of the Department.
Today 100 bodycams were handed over by the Leadership Intervention Unit (LIU). It’s chairman William Dawson says they are necessary to help keep Police accountable to the community and as a means of keeping everyone honest.
With this donation according to Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa, a total of 450 bodycams are being used by such units as the Gang Intelligence, Investigation and Interdiction Unit (GI-3) and Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU).
Since their introduction, incidents among the GI-3 where they were first introduced are down 80 percent. More tellingly, including last night’s triple homicide in Sandhill, there have been just 50 murders in the Belize District compared to 98 four years ago.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Richard Rosado explained that this is part of the new direction that the Department is taking to be part of a multi-sectoral approach encompassing education, health, social services and others and which emphasizes immediate intervention and rehabilitation rather than enforcement and locking people up.
