By Rubén Morales Iglesias: England had a party today in their first game of the 2022 FIFA World Cup routing Iran 6-2 in Group B’s first match.
Iran resisted for just over half an hour, but in the 35th minute Jude Bellingham put England ahead opening the faucet which would pour out the half a dozen goals.
Bubayo Saka followed in the 43rd and Raheem Sterling made it three before the half ended in the 45’+1.
Saka struck again in the 62nd for a 4-0 lead.
But Iran pushed forward and got a consolation goal in the 65th on a power strike by Mehdi Taremi to put the match at 4-1.
Six minutes later in the 71st, Marcus Rashford, who had just been on the field for a few seconds after substituting for Saka, nailed the Iranian keeper Ali Beiranvand for the 5-1 lead.
Jack Grealish sank in England’s final goal in the 90th minute for the final 6-1 score.
Ten minutes of injury time were added to the match after the 90th minute. At the end of these 10 minutes, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) check ruled a penalty kick in favour of Iran which was converted by Taremi in the 901+13 for the final 6-2 blowout.
Exceptional start for England who put the bar very high for the United States and Wales who play at 1:00 pm today.
Before that Senegal challenge the Netherlands at 10:00 am in Group A’s second game. In the first group match, Ecuador defeated hosts Qatar 2-0 in the opener on Sunday.
