Belize Defence Force participates at GIS symposium at the University of Belize

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), GIS day is celebrated in November as part of Geography Awareness Week.

GIS Day started in 1999 as an educational event for GIS users to showcase their projects that have real-world applications.

The University of Belize hosted the GIS Symposium on November 18, 2022.

The Belize Defence Force (BDF) says that Lt E. Varela gave his presentation on the importance of geo-intelligence, terrain analysis, and imagery exploitation in the effort to drive operations and influence strategic decision-making.

“Crucial emphasis was placed on our ability to maintain proper coordination when maneuvering troops in the unforgiving terrains of Belize, in order to meet the demands of national security,” the BDF noted.

“The military is known to be at the forefront of navigational and geographic technology, and as the demand for national security increases, the BDF is determined to maintain a high tempo in our operations, driven by GIS and its associated technologies,” a statement added.
