By Benjamin Flowers: The former head of the Central Bank of Brazil, Ilan Goldfajn, was elected President of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) this week.
Ilan Goldfajn was elected president of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) during a Special Meeting of the Bank’s Board of Governors on Sunday at the IDB Headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Delegates attended both virtually and in person, giving Goldfajin a notable majority vote (80 percent) and making him President of the global development institution of r the next five years.
“To be elected president, a candidate must receive a majority of the total voting power of the IDB’s member countries as well as the support of at least 15 of the 28 regional member countries (26 borrowing member countries, plus Canada and the United States),” the IDB explained. “The IDB has a total of 48 member countries, with offices in all borrowing countries as well as in Europe and Asia.”
Goldfajin officially takes up the post on December 19, replacing former IDB President Mauricio Claver-Carone, the first American to head the IDB, who was ousted over undisclosed ethics violations on September 26.
