By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Monday, Jamaican-born Raheem Sterling, who is an English professional footballer as winger for England’s national team scored his first goal at a World Cup, the Jamaican Observer reports.
Sterling scored his team’s 3rd goal in the first half. He also registered an assist on the day in an all-around strong display by England.
Sterling played for England at the 2 previous World Cups, in Brazil (2014) and Russia (2018), but failed to score on both occasions.
“Now here I am, ten years later, wearing number 10, heading into my third World Cup with the next generation of legends, and now it’s me holding the most caps…reality really can be crazier than dreams,” Sterling said on Facebook one week before the World Cup game.
According to the report, Sterling is the first Jamaican footballer to score a goal at the tournament since Theodore “Tappa” Whitmore at the 1998 World Cup in France.
