Prime Minister meets with Belize Coalition of Health Professionals to discuss current state of health system in Belize

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On November 11, 2022, the Belize Coalition of Health Professionals (BCHP) issued a release calling for the intervention of the Government of Belize and stakeholders in health to address the current state of the health system in Belize.

The BCHP cited extreme shortage of medical supplies, pension status, reduction of income tax for health workers, revision and implementation of the Belize health sector strategic plan 2014 to 2024, provision for health insurance for healthcare workers, and defining higher education and experience in a health-related field as a prerequisite for the appointment to the post of Minister of Health.

In addition, appointments of healthcare workers to the Ministry of Health and Wellness tendering committee.

Prime Minister John Briceno met with the BCHP on Monday, November 21, 2022 to discuss their concerns and establish an agreement and the way forward.

Attendees included Kevin Bernard Minister of Health and Wellness, Financial Secretary, Joseph Waihght, CEO of the Ministry of Health Dr. Julio Sabido and CEO Narda Garcia, Directors and Deputy Director of the Ministry of Health and Wellness, as well as the Chairman and CEO of KHMHA.

“Our pledge going forward is a collaborative cordial working relation for the improvement of the health system and providing health services for our people,” PM Briceno said.
