By Rubén Morales Iglesias: After a 36-year absence, Canada returned to the World Cup, produced a fine performance against No. 2 ranked Belgium outplaying the Europeans but ended up losing due to their inability to score.
For all their intents, and they had 21 breaks at goal, the Canadians couldn’t get the ball in the net, while Belgium had one good break at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium in Al Khor in Ar-Rayyan in front of 40,432 fans and converted for the 1-0 victory.
Canada’s best opportunity came in the form of a penalty kick after an 8th minute handball by Yannick Carrasco. With the assistance of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), the referee ruled in favour of the penalty kick, but Alphonso Davies had his shot stopped by Thibaut Courtois in the 11th minute.
Belgium were able to beat the Canadian defense on a long pass by Toby Alderweireld from their own side of the field that Michy Batshuayi was able to convert on the run in the 44th minute.
Canada had 21 attempts on goal to Belgium’s 9 with both getting just three on target.
Both now prepare for their next date on Sunday, November 27, when Belgium take on Morocco at 7:00 am and Canada challenge Croatia at 10:00 am.
