By Rubén Morales Iglesias: All the hopes of Costa Rica coming up with a good performance against Spain flew out the window as the game started and the European side started a one-team virtuoso show, coordinated by Sergio Busquets, which concluded in a 7-0 crushing of the Concacaf side.
In front of 40,013 fans at the Al Thumama Stadium in Doha, Spain denied Costa Rica the ball and deflated the Costa Rican side, punishing them with their worst World Cup defeat ever.
Goals by Dani Olmo (11’), Marco Asensio (21’), Ferran Torres (31’ – penalty kick) gave Spain a 3-nil lead in the first half. They were to add four more in the second half through Torres (54’), Gavi (74’), Carlos Soler (90’) and Alvaro Morata (90’+2’).
Luis Enrique’s side were sensationally thorough, so much so that Costa Rica couldn’t even make a single shot at goal. Spain made 17 with eight on target. Possession wise, the Spanish side had the ball 82% to Costa Rica’s 18%. They made an amazing 1043 passes with 93% accuracy while Costa Rica only completed 71% of their 231 passes.
In summary, Spain simply erased Costa Rica.
Next, Spain take on Germany on Sunday, November 27, at 1:00 pm while Costa Rica will face Japan at 4:00 am.
