By Benjamin Flowers: Today, the Stann Creek branch of the All China Federation of Overseas Thishanese donated 400 bags of groceries to the Belize City Council towards relief efforts following Hurricane Lisa.
The group made the donation today at City Hall, with Mayor Bernard Wagner, Deputy Mayor Allan Pollard, and Minister of Public Service, Constitutional and Political Reform and Religious Affairs, on-site to receive the bags.
Emilio Zabaneh, People’s United Party Chairman for the Stann Creek West Constituency, explained that the All China Federation Overseas got in touch with him following Hurricane Lisa, wanting to assist Belize City given the devastation left in the storm’s wake.
“They wanted to make a significant contribution in terms of groceries,” Zabaneh said.
“They got all of their Chinese vendors to come together and sourced this wholesale,” he added,
Zabaneh said that the bags retalied for around $65 each, making the value of the donation upwards of $26,000.
Deputy Mayor Pollard explained that the donations were a welcome addition to the humanitarian aid being distributed by the council.
“A lot of people had to prioritize and budget to maybe get materials for their house and had to cut down on food, so these groceries help us to bridge that gap for these families,” Pollard said.
He went on to say that the bags will be distributed as early as tomorrow, Thursday, November 24, and that Mayor Wagner along with other City Councilors will be visiting areas deemed to be most in need by the council’s assessments.
