By Breaking Belize News Staff: Last week, the south side of Belize City was on high alert as an afternoon robbery/shooting unfolded on Mahogany Street; the four men who were charged for that incident will not see trial until next year.
The men are 23-year-old, Marquise Conorquie, 23-year-old Nolvert Smith, 24-year-old, Keenan Castillo, and 26-year-old Tareef Westby. They were arraigned on a total of 17 charges in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court.
Their charges include attempted robbery, participating in criminal activity in association with a gang, kept unlicensed firearm, kept unlicensed ammunition, gang affiliation, and possession of a firearm with the serial number removed, among others.
The men all pleaded not guilty to the myriad of charges against them; however, given the offenses were committed with firearms, they were denied bail in the first instance and remanded to the Belize Central Prison, where they will remain until January 2023.
The men entered Lina Supermarket around 12:30 p.m. to rob the store; however, quick response from police in the area allowed officers to arrive while the robbery was still in progress and apprehend the men after several shots were fired.
