Samuel August, the man who killed two people including his own child by crashing a backhoe into a house, pleads guilty to murder

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Former Belize City Council employee Samuel August has pleaded guilty to killing his five-year-old son, the child’s grandmother, and injuring another child, after crashing a backhoe into the house they were staying at.

August appeared in the Supreme Court before Justice Susan Lamb on Tuesday, where he pleaded guilty to two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.

Justice Lamb has deferred his sentencing to January 12, 2023, but set December 14 for mitigation pleas where she will hear from August’s attorney Orson Elrington and another witness to testify of August’s character. Justice Lamb has also ordered a psychiatric evaluation for August, which will be taken into account when determining his sentence.

On October 31, 2018, August, who operated heavy machinery for the city council drove the backhoe into the home of Adelia Young, the mother and great grandmother of the two deceased. August rammed the backhoe repeatedly into the house killing Louise Young and Samir August and also injuring a 13-year-old girl.

August had previously lost a custody battle for his children to Young, following the death of the mother of his children. Enraged at the loss and the fact that he would have to pay child maintenance, he reportedly began saying goodbyes to people he cared about in preparation for the incident. The day before the incident, August allegedly texted his then girlfriend that he loved her and had told his son Samir that he would be going far away and did not know if he would see him again.

Following the incident, August was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for treatment for injuries he sustained while damaging the house, when he escaped and stole a vehicle from the hospital’s parking lot. His escape would be cut short however, after he crashed into a backhoe which was on the Philip Goldson Highway.

He was sentenced to seven years for stealing the vehicle that he crashed.
