By Rubén Morales Iglesias: In the 65th minute of Thursday’s World Cup match against Ghana, Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo made history by becoming the first player to score in five World Cups.
Cristiano scored for Portugal from the penalty spot against Ghanaian goalkeeper Lawrence Ati after being fouled. Portugal went on to win 3-2 in a frenzied match. The Portuguese star has now scored eight goals in his five World Cups.
The ex-Real Madrid-Manchester United-Juventus-Sporting CP player first scored in his debut World Cup in Germany in 2006 at age 21 in Portugal’s 2-0 win over Iran.
In South Africa, four years later, he scored against North Korea in a 7-0 rout. Next came his goal against Ghana, the same team that Portugal played against today, in their 2-1 win in 2014 in Brazil.
In 2018, Cristiano scored a hat trick in the 3-3 draw against Spain and converted the only goal in Portugal’s 1-0 victory over Morocco in Russia.
He leaves behind Brazilian Pelé, German players Uwe Seeler and Miroslav Klose, and Argentine Lionel Messi who have scored in four World Cups.
