By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Portugal finished asking for time in the most exciting match so far at the FIFA World Cup, celebrating a 3-2 win over Ghana at the long whistle.

The game went into a frenetic pace after Cristiano Ronaldo scored a penalty kick in the 65th minute after being fouled. The Portuguese star made history by becoming the first player to score in five World Cups with that goal. He had previously scored in 2006 in Germany, 2010 in South Africa, 2014 in the United States, and in 2018 in Russia.

Cristiano had netted the ball earlier in the 31st minute but United States referee Ismail Elfath had already blown a foul by Ronaldo, who had pushed his opponent in the struggle for the ball.

But Ghana, in their fourth World Cup, were unfazed with Cristiano’s achievement and their captain Andre Dede Ayew quickly tied the match in the 73rd minute.

In an exchange of blows, Portugal struck back with Joao Felix scoring his first ever World Cup goal in the 78th minute.

Rafael Leao, who had entered just three minutes earlier, fired in another one for Portugal in the 80th minute for a 3-1 lead.

Portugal appeared in the driver’s seat, but Ghana unsettled them, nailing their second goal in the 89th on a magnificent strike by Osman Bukari who emulated Cristiano’s SIU celebration much to the chagrin of the Portuguese captain.

Referee Elfath added eight minutes and Ghana kept pushing forward, nearly scoring in the last minute. Such was their pressure that Cristiano and company ended up asking the referee to blow his whistle. When it finally sounded, they were much relieved to escape with the three points.

Ghana, at 61 in the FIFA World Ranking, might be the lowest ranked team in the World Cup, but today didn’t look like it at all.

South Korea, who played to a scoreless draw with Uruguay today, will have their hands full when they meet on Monday, November 28, at 7:00 am. That same day, Portugal will meet Uruguay at 1:00 pm.
