2022 FIFA World Cup: United States face England as second set of Round 1 games kick off on Friday

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The United States against England is probably the best game on Friday as the second set of fixtures get underway in the First Round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup while the Americans celebrate their Thanksgiving weekend. But the Ecuador-Netherlands matchup is as good as both countries registered 2-0 wins in their first outing.

The day starts with Group B as Wales, who gained a point against the United States, go in as favourites over Iran, who were bombed 6-2 by England in their first game. The match starts at 4:00 am at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium in Ar-Rayyan.

The second match features the two Group A teams that lost in their opener. Qatar, who got the ignominious title of being the first host country to lose on opening day by falling 2-0 to Ecuador, will match up against Senegal, who were outplayed 2-0 as well by the Netherlands. Their match kicks off at 7:00 am at the Al Thumama Stadium in Doha.

The other two Group A teams, Ecuador and the Netherlands with three points each and a similar goal difference, go face to face at 10:00 am at the Khalifa International Stadium in Ar-Rayyan. While Ecuador should be able to hold its ground, the European side go in as favourites, in what should be a very competitive game.

While they may be allies on the political front, any confrontation between the United States and England is worth following. Afterall being once a colony, the United States who’ve even changed the spelling of many a word of the English language just to irk the English, don’t miss a beat when they have the overseas country on the other side of the field. For the British, the feeling is reciprocal. So, expect England to come out firing on all cylinders and the United States intending to do the same. England will only hope they didn’t unleash all their ammunition on Iran in their opening match.

Their match kicks off at 1:00 pm at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khar.
