Around 10,000 Google employees could be losing their jobs soon

Posted: Thursday, November 24, 2022. 6:56 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Alphabet, the parent company of Google is reportedly preparing to fire up to 10,000 employees, Business Standard reports.

Google, headquartered in Mountain View, California, is reportedly looking at employee performance records with a view to lay off those deemed to be underperforming, reports say. The cap of 10,000 employees being sought as underperformers makes up roughly 6 percent of the company’s total staff.

“The news on layoff at Google has come within days of a letter that hedge fund TCI, an investor in the company, wrote to Alphabet. TCI has shares worth $6 billion in Alphabet,” Business Standard said.

There is some speculation that Google’s operations in India may be a target for many of the layoffs; however, the company has refrained from making any official comments regarding the pending layoffs.

News that Google is planning layoffs comes after other large tech companies such as Meta, the parent company for Facebook, Amazon, and Netflix have done the same. Apple has also announced a hiring freeze.
