By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Hibiscus Mayan Arts and Crafts Co-operative in Santa Cruz, Toledo, have been making good use of the sewing machines they received on September 2 under the UNDP GEF-SGP funded ‘Cooperatives’ Rapid Response to Covid 19 and the 2020 Floods in Belize Project’.

According to the Department of Cooperatives, within the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise, the Santa Cruz cooperative received ten sewing machines at the time.

“This co-operative has engaged in the manufacture of arts and crafts, that is woven baskets, embroidered bags, and ornaments, and Mayan traditional clothing,” said Gareth Murillo, Registrar of Cooperatives.

Murillo said the Hibiscus Mayan Arts and Crafts Co-operative have been marketing their products to travelers and tourists who pass through the communities and villages of southern Belize but suffered heavy losses during the COVID-19 pandemic due to the lockdowns and travel restrictions.

“Their inclusion in the project was to provide support in the form of a strategic investment aimed at building sustainability and resiliency, enhancing their productivity, and improving their technical and financial capacity to manage their operations,” Murillo said.

The Cooperatives Registrar said he was happy to receive photographs from the cooperative showing that they are thankful for the sewing machines and are putting them to good use.
