By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Thursday, the European Union parliament voted in favor of a resolution calling on FIFA to help compensate the families of the migrant workers who died, as well as workers who suffered rights abuses, during preparations for the World Cup, Reuters report.
In addition, lawmakers are calling on Qatar authorities to conduct a full investigation into human rights abuses in the run-up to the competition.
It is believed that many migrant workers from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka that worked on the World Cup infrastructure projects died in the run-up to the World Cup.
To date, only 37 deaths have been linked to the construction of the World Cup stadiums, of those, 34 are classified “nonwork-related”.
The resolution also deplored reports of abuses of the LGBTQ+ community in Qatar and called on the country to decriminalize same-sex relations.
