International News: Largest freshwater lake in El Salvador swamped by trash

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: El Salvador’s largest freshwater lake, Suchitlan which means the “place of flowers” has been grossly neglected even as global environmental concerns are on the rise, Reuters report.

The Cerron Grande reservoir’s ecosystem is home to native fish, waterbirds, and mammals such as cougars and ocelots.

The freshwater lake is a protected site but in reality, it is one of Central America’s most polluted bodies of water.

Women navigating canoes would work from morning to clean the lake but the government has cut its budget for workers and the lake has now been abandoned.

The garbage comes from the Lempa River, which flows from the Guatemalan highlands via neighboring Honduras, before settling in Cerron Grande, located at the foot of El Salvador’s biggest hydroelectric dam.

Data from the Environment Ministry noted that about 1/5^th of garbage produced in El Salvador is not processed correctly.
