By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Honduran national caught 14 days after entering Belize illegally via canoe, has been fined in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court.
Twenty-six-year-old Luis Perez was arraigned on Wednesday and was read a single charge of illegal entry.
Perez, who was unrepresented, pleaded guilty to the charge and was fined $1,000 plus $5 cost of court which needed to be paid forthwith as he is not a Belizean resident.
The Immigration Department also applied to the court for a removal order which was granted. Authorities will deport Perez back to Honduras once he has served out a six-month sentence at the Belize Central Prison for being unable to pay his fine.
Police detained Perez on Tuesday, November 22, and called in Immigration Department personnel suspecting he had committed an immigration offense.
Perez declared that he had entered Belize on Sunday, November 6, 2022, at a point along the banks of the Mopan River. He also told authorities that he crossed into Belize in a canoe and then made his way from Benque Viejo Del Carmen then he traveled to Belmopan where he met with family members who reside in Belize City.
Perez said he stayed with his relatives until he was apprehended by police.
