2022 FIFA World Cup – Iran score 2-0 agonizing victory over Wales

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Iran conjured a great comeback beating Wales 2-0 in the agonizing minutes of the match against Wales after stumbling to a 6-2 loss to England in their opener.

Defender Roozbeh Cheshmi fired a 20-yard blast in the 8th minute of injury time (90’+8’) to unlock the Wales defensive wall to give Iran what many thought would be a 1-0 win a few minutes after Welsh starting goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey was red-carded for a failed acrobatic flying kick clearance against an attacking Iran forward.

But Iran was not done, three minutes later (90’+11’), Ramin Rezaian put the ball deftly beyond goalkeeper Danny Ward for the final 2-0 sparking a wild celebration by Iran fans at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium in Ar-Rayyan.

40,875 fans attended the match.

The second match features the two Group A teams that lost in their opener. Qatar will match up against Senegal at 7:00 am at the Al Thumama Stadium in Doha.

The other two Group A teams, Ecuador and the Netherlands with three points each go face to face at 10:00 am at the Khalifa International Stadium in Ar-Rayyan.

The United States close the day against England at 1:00 pm at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khar.
