By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Senegal bagged their first three points in the FIFA World Cup beating Qatar 3-1 crushing any hopes the hosts had of making the second round.

After several tries, Senegal opened the score in the 41st minute when Boulaye Dia, face to face with goalkeeper Meshaal Barsham, fired into the net for the 1-0 lead.

Three minutes after resumption of play, Famara Diedhou headed the ball past Barsham for a 2-0 lead.

Qatar improved their level of play scoring their first ever World Cup goal through a Mohammed Muntari’s header in the 78th minute, but Cheikh Dieng put the game away in the 84th minute.

41,197 fans saw the home team fall again at the Al Thumama Stadium in Doha.

Qatar are now not only the first host nation to lose on opening day, on Friday they also became the first host nation to lose two consecutive games in the first round.

For Senegal, it’s the second time they’ve scored three goals in a World Cup match. Their first was in a 3-3 draw with Uruguay in 2002. Additionally, this was the first time they won a game by more than one goal.

The other two Group A teams, Ecuador and the Netherlands with three points each and a similar goal difference, go face to face at 10:00 am at the Khalifa International Stadium in Ar-Rryyan.

The United States and England (Group B) play the final game of the day at 1:00 pm at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khar
