Caye Caulker resident busted with more than 60 pieces of undersized conch fined over $5,000

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A fisherman from Caye Caulker is in debt to the court for over $5,000 after being convicted for possession of illegal fisheries.

Thirty-year-old Amner Vargas appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, charged with one count of possession of undersized conchs, to wit, 63 unprocessed undersized conchs and another count of possession of undersized conchs for 14 market clean, (partially processed) conchs.

He pleaded guilty to both counts and was fined $1,000 per offense, and $5 cost of court per offense, a total of $2,010. Vargas has until January 31, 2023 to pay these fines.

He was additionally fined $50 per conch for the 63 unprocessed undersized conchs which came up to $3,150.00 of which he must pay by January 31, 2023 in default, distress. For the 14 market clean partially processed conchs, Vargas was fined $700 and given until December 22, 2022 to pay in default, distress.
