16 Days of Activism: Why we must unite to end violence against women and girls

By Aaron Humes: With reports rising and more and more perpetrators believing that their actions are a private matter, the call to end active gender-based violence must last beyond the 16 Days of Activism, according to guest speaker and Speaker of the House of Representatives Valerie Woods.

At the launch event Friday afternoon, she cited statistics that told of a rise in complaints about domestic violence between January and August as well as in unlawful sexual intercourse and rape.

While there are plans at the macro level, there are things individuals can do, the Speaker said: wear orange occasionally as the colour representing the issue; talk to your representatives; speak out on social media and listen to survivors as well as to activists such as Speaker of the Children’s Parliament Azaria Chaplin, stating that this must not only shake us but stir us and motivate us – to say, “Enough is enough.”

Afterwards, there was a short parade and candlelight vigil through the center of Belize City.

The 16 Days of Activism encompasses World AIDS Day on December 1 and Human Rights Day on December 10.
