By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Thursday, November 24, 2022, the British High Commission in Belize hosted a reception to recognize recipients of the Commonwealth Points of Light award, Dorla Bowman and Michele Irving.
British High Commissioner Nicole Davison paid tribute to Bowman and Irving for their outstanding contributions to their communities.
Bowman, the 2022 recipient, is a Belizean social justice activist. She has dedicated over 40 years to championing women’s rights and gender equality and supporting women who have been victims of domestic abuse.
Irving, the 2020 recipient, is recognized as the Belize Covid community hero for supporting the most vulnerable in her community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Michele is also working with local NGOs to ensure that access to sexual and reproductive health services is maintained during the pandemic.
“On behalf of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Her Excellency Nicole Davison presented the award of recognition for inspiring change and their commitment to the promotion and protection of women’s rights,” the British High Commission noted.
