By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Costa Rica salvages some honour slipping past Japan 1-0 by nailing their only shot on target in their second game after stumbling to a 7-0 defeat to Spain last Wednesday. The win keeps their second round hopes alive though their next rival is Germany.
41,479 fans saw the Costa Rican win at the Ahmed bin Al Stadium in Ar-Rayyan
Costa Rica’s only goal came in the 81st minute when Yeltsin Tejeda collected a loose ball, crossed to Keysher Fuller on the edge of the penalty area. Fuller set up himself and curled the ball to the far-left post beating goalkeeper Shuichi Gonda who managed to touch the ball with his outstretched fingers but couldn’t change the trajectory of the ball.
Costa Rica played an ultra-defensive game against Japan that had beaten Germany in the opener 2-1.
Costa Rica’s victory not only keeps them alive, but they also make it easier for Germany who play Spain later today at 1:00 pm at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor. With the probabilities favouring Japan to beat Costa Rica, Germany would have had to beat Spain, had that happened. But now that Costa Rica stunned Japan, Germany would still be alive with a draw against Spain.
Costa Rica close off against Germany next Thursday.
In other games today, Belgium play Morocco at 7:00 am at the Al Thumama Stadium in Doha while Croatia match up against Canada at 10:00 am at the Khalifa International Stadium in Ar-Rayyan.
