Posted: Sunday, November 27, 2022. 8:11 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A fisherman from Chunox Village, Corozal District is out on bail after being charged for fishing within a conservation zone.

Thirty-five-year-old Leonardo Mesh appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Friday where he was accused of fishing in the vicinity of Dog Flee Caye at Black Bird Caye Conservation Zone, (Zone 11 A) off Turneffe Atoll Marine Reserve. It was further alleged that when authorities found him, Mesh was in possession of 42 conchs still in the shell.

Mesh initially pleaded guilty to the charge, but after the facts were read to him he changed his plea. There was no objection to bail and it was offered to him in the sum of $2,500 plus one surety of the same which he was able to meet.
Mesh is due back in court on January 15, 2023.

The bust reportedly occurred on November 11, around 8:40 am. Authorities allege they found Mesh in a canoe within the reserve, where extractive fishing is prohibited.
