Man fined almost $3,000 for fishing in marine reserve

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 24-year-old fisherman from northern Belize was fined in court on Friday after being caught fishing in a marine reserve.

Nicholas Trapp, a resident of Chunox Village appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court where he pleaded guilty to fishing in the Black Bird Caye Conservation Zone, (Zone 11 A) of Turneffe Atoll Marine Reserve. Authorities found him in the reserve on November 11, with 19 pieces of conch.

For his plea, Trapp was fined $2,000 plus $5.00 cost of court which he must pay by May 30, 2023, or he will face six months in prison. He was fined an additional $950, representing a $50 charge per piece of conch. He has until February 28, 2023 to pay that fine or the court will seize and sell off his assets to cover the cost.
