By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Portugal became the third team to qualify to the second round with a 2-0 win over Uruguay in Group H.
Portugal unlocked the Uruguay defense in the 54th minute. On the left of the penalty box, Bruno Fernandes sent what appeared to be a cross into the box. Cristiano, in front of goal, leaped to head the incoming ball and though he was initially credited with the goal by fifa.com, video replays showed he didn’t make contact as the ball found its way into the net past goalkeeper Sergio Rochet. The announcer at the Lusail Stadium in Al Daayen made no mistake announcing Fernandes as the scorer. Fifa.com made the change in goalscorer a little later crediting Fernandes with the goal.
In the 58th minute, Uruguay’s Edinson Cavani missed right in front of goal trying to acrobatically snap the ball with his right foot behind his left but did not make contact, missing a great opportunity.
Uruguay pressed hard and created good breaks, including a close call by Luis Suárez, but couldn’t score.
Portugal was to get one more off a penalty kick in the 90th minute Portugal gets a penalty kick for a questionable handball in the box. In the 90’+3’, Fernandes, considering that Cristiano Ronaldo had left the ball game, took the penalty and converted by shooting to the left of keeper Rochet.
Portugal totalled six points and qualified atop Group H ahead of Ghana (3 points), Uruguay and South Korea (1 point each).
Uruguay will close against Ghana and Portugal will take on South Korea on Friday, December 2.
