World Health Organization renames Monkeypox as ‘mpox’

Posted: Monday, November 28, 2022. 11:20 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that ‘mpox’ is the preferred name for Monkeypox, CNN reports

WHO says that both names will be used for 1 year until the word Monkeypox is phased out.

WHO says that Monkeypox was named in 1970, over 10 years after the virus that causes the disease was found in captive monkeys.

But monkeypox probably didn’t start in monkeys – its origin is still unknown – and the virus can be found in several other kinds of animals.

The name was created before WHO published best practices for naming diseases in 2015.

Experts have since pushed to rename the disease to avoid discrimination and stigma that could steer people away from testing and vaccination.

The Monkeypox outbreak has largely affected men who have sex with men.

Health experts say there has been devastating and stigmatizing effects that the messaging around the ‘monkeypox’ virus have on already vulnerable communities.

To date, there have been over 81,000 Monkeypox cases in 110 locations around the world.
