2022 FIFA World Cup: Senegal beat Ecuador 2-1 to qualify to Round of 16

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: African champions Senegal are celebrating their qualification to the Round of 16 in the FIFA World Cup with a 2-1 win over Ecuador at the Khalifa International Stadium in Ar- Rayyan in front of 44,569 fans.

Senegal dominated Ecuador who had looked good in the first two games but succumbed today to Senegal who totalled six points.

Senegal took the lead against Ecuador in the 7th minute of injury time (45’+7’) at the end of the first half off a penalty kick scored by Ismaila Sarr. Senegal earned the penalty after a foul by Piero Hincapié against Sarr within the penalty area.

Ecuador fought back and drew even through Moises Caicedo in the 68^th minute of the ball game but their joy was short-lived as Senegal scored two minutes later when Kalidou Koulibaly put them in the driver’s seat as the 2-1 score qualified them to the next round.

Senegal qualify in second position behind the Netherlands who totalled seven.
