FIFA World Cup: United States qualify to Round of 16 on 1-0 win over Iran in Group B

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The United States qualified to the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup on a 1-0 win over Iran at the Al Thumama Stadium in Doha in front of 42,127 fans.

The United States gave notice of their intentions in the 11^th minute when Christian Pulisic headed the ball to goal. However, the Iranian goalkeeper Ali Beiranvand was able to control.

The United States pressed hard in the first 20 minutes of the ball game with more opportunities though Iran were able to push forward a couple of times.

The Americans got their prize in the 38^th minute off a goal by their talisman Christian Pulisic. The play was initiated on the left side by Weston McKennie making a cross to the right side of the penalty area to Serginho Dest who headed the ball to an incoming Pulisic. ‘Captain America’ snapped the ball with his left foot into the net past Beiranvand.

In the play, Pulisic ran into Beiranvand and had to be attended to by the medical personnel. He was taken off the field and reentered five minutes after the goal, though he didn’t return for the second half.

In the 45^th minute, Tim Weah chipped the ball into the net past Beiranvand but his goal was called off due to an offside.

Iran pushed forward particularly in the closing minutes but couldn’t get the draw that would have put them through.

The United States qualified on five points along with Group B leaders England who made it with seven points.
