Is there any way back for Patrick Faber?

Posted: Tuesday, November 29, 2022. 10:34 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: 2022 has been without question the worst of years for Patrick Faber.

He started it on top as Leader of the United Democratic Party and of the Opposition in the House of Representatives. He will likely end it on the outs with the party, shunned after allegations of domestic violence and nudged out of his long-standing Collet stronghold by a protégé.

His name came up during today’s press briefing when reporters tried to draw comparison between the sagas of Faber and John Saldivar and why the party did not go the extra mile for the former as they appear to be doing for the latter.

Party chairman Michael Peyrefitte said in reply that while there may have been no conviction, there was evidence, however disputed, against Faber at the time of his incident: “We had video evidence; we had a person go to the police, make statements to the police; charges were brought, he went to the court. And yes, you could say if the person that made those allegations against the former Party Leader was lying, why hasn’t the former Party Leader sued that person for malicious prosecution? So, we had a lot more then over what we have now,” adding that if the U.S. brings charges locally, that substantially changes the picture; however, as of now Saldivar has not been charged, much less indicted, of any criminal activity.

Later, Peyrefitte was questioned as to Faber’s future in the UDP with Ian Jones the designated candidate in the division. Peyrefitte said that basically, it’s up to Faber: “Without saying too much, I believe that the party did everything to make sure that we could make amends with everybody, in terms of moving the party in a single direction as a single, unified force. I don’t think there is any more we could have done. All I will say [is] this, generally speaking: if a person wants to be part of an organization, then they have to act like they want to be part of that organization. You cannot disrespect an organization, then turn around and expect that an organization will make accommodations for you; that’s just nature.”

Peyrefitte added that the party could not refuse Faber if he genuinely came forward wanting to make amends in order to run for the party in the division, but he allowed that no one would feel comfortable being “blackmailed” to be part of the party and that the decisions of the National Party Council and other authorities must be adhered to and respected before such discussions could move forward.
