By Breaking Belize News Staff: Forty-one-year-old Devon Jones, a resident of Rhaburn Ridge in the Belize District, was charged with attempted murder but pleaded down to a lesser charge when he appeared in the Supreme Court today.
Jones was charged with knocking down Francis Gill with his SUV on August 30, 2014, while Gill stood outside of the popular restaurant Lee Chee on Freetown Road.
Jones along with his attorney Orson Elrington, appeared before Justice Ricardo O’Neil Sandcroft, where he learned that his initial charge for aggravated assault and maiming, had been upgraded to attempted murder, prompting him to plead guilty to use of deadly means of harm.
Justice Sandcroft reserved sentencing until December 6.
In court, it was disclosed that Gill, who lost his right leg as a result of Jones’s actions, filed a civil claim against Jones which he won and compensation had already been paid. It was also disclosed in court that Gill was murdered in 2018.
