By Aaron Humes: The first Section 7031(c) designation of a “significantly corrupt” person is unwanted history for Belize.
Prime Minister John Briceno has been quoted as saying that the announcement was a “wake-up call” for his Administration, that there are watchful eyes upon them not only in Belize but also from abroad.
And United Democratic Party chairman Michael Peyrefitte told reporters today that it comes down to personal values: “When you behave in a certain way in office, there will be a day of reckoning, you know. And you have to understand that how you comport yourself when you’re in office is very, very important, because things may come against you that may be fair or unfair, but you have to be very careful to go out of your way to do the right thing, but be seen to do the right thing.”
Peyrefitte broadly hinted that the PUP may well face its own travails before concluding, “If you haven’t done anything to bring the perception that you are doing anything wrong, then you have nothing to worry about, but if you have been doing what you are not supposed to do and the world is taking a huge stand on corruption and illegal behaviour in your office, then you should worry.”
