2022 FIFA World Cup: Argentina, Mexico looking for ticket to Round of 16 this afternoon

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Argentina and Mexico are the two Latin American hopefuls today at 1:00 pm in the World Cup in Group C.

Argentina play Poland at Stadium 974 in Doha while Mexico take on Saudi Arabia at the  Lusail Stadium in Al Daayen.

Robert Lewandowski’s Poland lead the group with four points followed by Argentina and Saudi Arabia with three and Mexico with one.

The way things stand, Poland qualify with a win or a draw, but if they lose to Argentina and Saudi Arabia do likewise with Mexico, they will be knocked out. Should they lose and Saudi Arabia draw, goal difference will decide which of the two go forward. If Poland lose and Mexico win, goal difference will also decide as they would both be tied at four points.

Argentina must win to earn a direct ticket. A draw will be enough if Mexico and Saudi Arabia draw as well. If  La Albiceleste draw and Mexico wins, goal difference will decide if Argentina or Mexico accompany Poland. However, if they draw and Saudi Arabia beat Mexico, Argentina will go home. Of course, if they lose they are out.

Saudi Arabia qualify to knockout round if they win. A draw will suffice if Poland beat Argentina. However, if the two matches are tied, they will return home. If they draw and Argentina drop Poland, goal difference will decide if Poland or Saudi Arabia advance. A loss to Mexico sends them home as well.

With only one point to their credit, the only hope for Mexico is to win. Should they win, they qualify if Poland beat Argentina. If they beat Saudi Arabia and Argentina and Poland draw, goal difference will decide if they or Argentina go through. If both Mexico and Argentina win, Mexico and Poland will be tied with four points and goal difference will untangle them.

The top Group C team will play France and the second-place team will face Australia in the Round of 16.
