By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Costa Rica and Germany, both of whom had a dismal start to the FIFA World Cup, will be facing each other tomorrow hoping that they can turn their luck around and make it out of Group E into the Round of 16.
Though Germany are the favourites to win, Costa Rica are determined to not go out the way they started. Germany are also following the same trend, particularly after having bowed out of the last World Cup in Russia in the first round after winning the previous edition in Brazil.
Strangely enough Costa Rica go in with three points while Germany only have one. Both need to win to qualify but Germany’s statistics make them dependent on the Spain-Japan match even if they beat Costa Rica. The Central American side would qualify outright with a victory.
Spain (4 points) and Japan (3 points) also qualify if they win, but a draw would only qualify Spain and Japan would depend on the Costa Rica-Germany game.
In Group F, three teams are still in the hunt for a knockout round ticket. That’s Croatia and Morocco, with 4 points, and Belgium, with 3. Canada, without points, already have their tickets to fly home.
A win qualifies any of the three. A draw might be good enough, but goal difference may be necessary. Croatia and Morocco might even qualify with a loss but not so for Belgium.
Here’s the schedule:
Group F: Croatia vs Belgium @ 9:00 am at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Ar-Rayyan
Group F: Canada vs Morocco @ 9:00 am Al Thumama Stadium in Doha
Group E: Japan vs Spain @ 1:00 am at Khalifa International Stadium in Ar-Rayyan
Group E: Costa Rica vs Germany @ 1:00 pm Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor
