By Benjamin Flowers: Today, the Belize City Council received a grant from the government of Japan that will be used to buy two new garbage trucks, trucks that Belize City Mayor Bernard Wager says will not affect the work of Belize Waste Control.
Wagner, speaking at the grant ceremony which was held at City Hall, said that the grant was valued at over $500,000 and will be used to upgrade the city’s fleet from two to four garbage trucks. He noted that the collaboration with Japan was an initiative that started back in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“As you know Belize Waste Control has a contract for the collection of commercial and residential garbage but there are always gaps, in terms of hot spots across the city,” Wagner said. “We have hot spots where our night team goes in and fills those gaps that do not fall within the scope of the Belize Waste Control contract.”
Mayor Wagner signed the grant agreement today along with the Ambassador of Japan to Belize H.E. Iryu Kazuhiro doing the signing. The grant was made possible through the Government Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots and Human Security Projects Programme. Wagner said that the donation is timely as Belize City is a growing municipality and was not being adequately served under the current configuration for trash collection. The council and the Embassy of Japan say they will hold another ceremony once the trucks have been bought.
