By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Matthew Leckie’s 60th-minute goal gave Australia a 1-0 win over Denmark qualifying them for the second time in the World Cup.
For Australia, who are in their sixth World Cup without missing any of the last five, their first Round of 16 participation was in 2006 in Germany.
Tunisia had just scored over France when Leckie made a run up the middle. Looking around for help but no one was there, he kept going forward and smacked the ball into the goal. That strike would eventually give the Socceroos the ticket to the knockout round.
One of the favorites, Denmark crashed out with only one point.
Australia’s six points qualified them ahead of Tunisia who beat France 1-0 but only garnered four points.
Australia will play the winner of Group C while France will play the Group C second-place team in the Round of 16.
