By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Jamaica is among the 84 countries hit by a WhatsApp data leak, the Jamaica Observer reports.
According to that report, almost 400,000 local phone numbers were compromised.
Cybernews, an online security publication made the announcement citing that someone is allegedly selling the mobile phone numbers of nearly 500 million WhatsApp users from 84 countries.
On November 16, someone posted an ad on a hacking forum claiming to be selling a 2022 database of 487 million WhatsApp user mobile numbers, with over 32 million US user records included.
This also included phone numbers of citizens from Egypt, Italy, Saudi Arabia, France, and Turkey.
In addition, the database also has almost 10 million Russian and over 11 million UK citizens’ phone numbers, while 385,890 Jamaican records were noted.
Cybernews says that the information is used by attackers for SMS phishing.
