By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Croatia held on to the 0-0 score despite a full press by Belgium and qualified to the Round of 16 behind Morocco in Group F, while Belgium crashed out.
The match was played in from of 43,984 fans at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Ar-Rayyan.
2018 subchampions Croatia proposed a more offensive game but 2108 third-place Belgium drove hard toward the end but neither could score which turned out in favour of Croatia.
In the 15th minute, referee Anthony Taylor awarded Croatia a penalty-kick after Yannick Carrasco fouled Andrej Kramaric in the penalty area but it ruled off by Taylor after the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review showed that Croatia’s Dejan Lovren had been offside in the previous play.
Belgium had their best opportunity in the 60th minute when Romelu Lukaku, who had entered as a substitute, fired a powerful shot within the penalty area but the ball ricocheted off the left post back onto the field.
Lukaku had another break toward the end of the game, but he couldn’t find the net.
Belgium kept pushing forward while Croatia defended, managing to salvage the 0-0 draw which carried them through along with Morocco who beat Canada 2-1 in the other Group F match.
Croatia will play the Group E winner in the next round while Morocco will match up with the Group E second place team.
