By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Three of the four teams (Croatia, Morocco, and Belgium) playing on Thursday morning in Group F have the possibility of qualifying to the Round of 16. Canada, not having gained any points, are out of the qualifying picture.
Croatia and Morocco, with 4 points, are better positioned than Belgium, who have three.
2018 subchampions Croatia tackle the world’s two ranked team Belgium. This game is going to be very competitive.
On paper, Morocco should have the easier opponent, but Canada don’t want to go out losing a third straight. If they play the way they did against Belgium, they could shock Morocco.
In simple terms, Croatia and Morocco qualify if they win or draw while Belgium qualify if they beat Croatia.
Looking deeper, if Croatia lose they would be out if Morocco beat or draw with Canada. In that case, if Canada defeat Morocco, goal difference will determine if they or Morocco advance.
If Morocco do not win or draw, they would need Belgium to win over Croatia. In that case goal difference will determine if they or Croatia go through.
Belgium advance if they overcome Croatia while a loss kicks them. If they draw and Canada beat Morocco, goal difference will decide if they or Morocco make it through.
Here’s the morning schedule:
Group F: Croatia vs Belgium @ 9:00 am at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Ar-Rayyan
Group F: Canada vs Morocco @ 9:00 am Al Thumama Stadium in Doha
