By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man who was charged this week for breaking into the home of his estranged common-law wife and injuring her, told the court that he only has a few months left to live.
Forty-six-year-old Dirk Thurton appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday before Senior Magistrate Baja Shoman where he was read one count of burglary, one count of harm, and one count of wounding.
He pleaded not guilty to all charges and the prosecution objected to bail on a number of grounds including the seriousness of the offense, the prevalence of domestic violence in Belize, and the fact that the incident is not Thurton’s first domestic violence-related charge.
When asked why he should be granted bail, Thurton, who was in visible pain, and had a bag attached to his abdomen, told the court he is a cancer patient who was told by physicians that he only had two to three months left to live.
After hearing both sides, the Magistrate granted Thurton bail in the sum of $3,000 plus one surety of the same with a number of conditions including barring him from contacting the complainant or visiting the area where she lives.
However, Thurton was unable to meet bail and he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until January 13, 2023.
