By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man charged with stealing from his own stepfather pleaded guilty in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court this week and received a fine.
Forty-one-year-old David Gregorio appeared unrepresented in court on Wednesday, charged with a single count of theft.
Gregorio threw himself to the mercy of the court and begged for a fine instead of jail time, especially since he has one conviction for theft. He was fined $350 plus a $5.00 cost of court which he was given until January 15, 2023, to pay or he would face three months in prison.
However, while in court, the magistrate was made aware that Gregorio owed the court a total of $1,715 for a number of convictions for offenses such as possession of a controlled drug in 2013 when he was fined $190; $55 for indecent words back in 2005; another $205 for possession of controlled drugs in 2015; $205 for yet another drug possession charge in 2016; $30 for a public drinking charge; $30 for a bicycle offense and $205 for a theft of a motor vehicle charge.
Senior Magistrate Baja Shoman told Gregorio that before he could go home, he needed to make a payment towards his outstanding fines, which he did.
