By Benjamin Flowers: Former Deputy Mayor, Belize City Councilor Micah Goodin left the country earlier this year to pursue a law degree and Mayor Bernard Wagner says that his ability to balance law school and the work of a councilor is applaudable.
Wagner said this week that Goodin has managed to attend all caucus meetings virtually since his departure and continues to be of service to the council and the people of Belize despite not being in the country.
“He is doing well, we congratulate Councilor Goodin,” Wagner said. “We congratulate him and we wish him well and we believe that all Belizeans should wish a brother well,” Wagner said.
Wagner noted that a city councilor is engaged at the policy level and does not handle the day to day running of their portfolio, making it entirely possible for Goodin to perform well without actually being in Belize.
Goodin left Belize in August for Barbados to study at the University of the West Indies; having been granted study leave by the Mayor in concurrence with four other City Councilors. In September, Mayor Wagner clarified that the regulations empowering him to grant study leave allowed for him to grant such leave “for six-month segments.”
The current administration of the Belize City Council will see the end of its term in February of 2024.
