By Benjamin Flowers: Belize City Mayor Bernard Wager stands by the City Council’s decision to contract the services of the company GEL Quarry to conduct street rehabilitation works, stressing that, to his knowledge, there is no conflict of interest with regard to Councilor Edmund Kwan.
The council voted to grant GEL Quarry a $1.2 million contract to conduct rehabilitation works on the south side of Belize City in the Gungulung area, a vote that Kwan participated in. However, Kwan’s social media information had him listed as a Director of GEL Quarry and his Linkedin page still has him listed as the company’s manager.
Channel 7 News reports that Kwan also put up three properties he owns as collateral for the company to secure a loan. However, Wagner said that the vote to award GEL Quarry the contract was a transparent and straightforward process.
“I have no knowledge that councilor Kwan is a shareholder. You will have to show me that. To the best of my knowledge GEL quarry and Councilor Kwan have no relationship,” Wagner said. “He has indicated to us that he has no shareholding in GEL Quarry and we believe in that.”
Wagner said that the company is doing work that will benefit some of the city’s poorest residents and that the council is proud of the work.
Kwan reportedly said that he sold off his shares in the company, and just hasn’t changed his Linkedin information because he forgot the password.
