By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Brazil fielded the bench against Cameroon and paid for it falling 1-0 though they still finished at the top of Group G with six points ahead of Switzerland only by goal difference. Cameroon totalled four points but fell short and will go back home.
Cameroon, who had played an offensive less match, pushed through in then 90’+2’ and scored. Their captain Vincent Aboubakar headed the ball spectacularly past goalkeeper Ederson, took off his shirt in celebration. United States referee Ismail Elfath shook his hand, served him his second yellow card, then the red card, and sent him off.
Cameroon were able to hold Brazil down for the final minutes and raked a 1-0 victory against the favourites to win it all.
In front of 88,103 fans at the Lusail Stadium in Al Daayen, Brazil were unable to finish the first round with nine points, something no other team had done.
But no one seemed very concerned though for Cameroon it will go down in the books that they beat Brazil 1-0 at the World Cup.
Everyone knew that Neymar, sidelined with an ankle injury after their first game, wouldn’t play and that manager Tite would make a number of changes. The Brazil manager, however, made nine changes compared to the team that played against Switzerland. None of the players who were fielded against Serbia made the cut for the first eleven today. With the team already qualified, the idea was to rest the regular starters and give the second team a break. So, players like goalkeeper Allison and field players like Marquinhos, Vinicius Jr, Richarlison, and Raphinha were all on the bench as the game started.
In their place, Tite fielded a nearly totally new line-up comprising Ederson in goal; Dani Alves, Eder Militao, Alex Telles, and Bremer in defence; Fabinho, Fred, Gabriel Martinelli, Rodrygo, and Antony in the midfield, and Gabriel Jesus up front.
In the end, Cameroon benefitted and will leave the World Cup with a victory their players will be able to recount to their grandchildren.
Brazil will play South Korea on Monday, December 5 at 1:00 pm at Stadium 974 in Doha, while Switzerland will match up against Portugal on Tuesday, December 6 at 1:00 pm at the Lusail Iconic Stadium in Al Daayen.
